Lokanarkavu, a few kilometres from Vadakara in north Kozhikode, is the temple of the Goddess whom the people of the area lovingly call Lokanarkavilamma – the Mother of Lokanarkavu. The name is said to be a shortened form of Lokamalayarkavu, a sacred grove of the world, the hills and the river.
The complex is really three temples side by side: the main shrine of Durga, a Shiva temple in the middle and a Mahavishnu temple to the north, set among old trees and a temple pond. For people who love the Vadakkan Pattukal – the ballads of north Malabar – this is a special place: their greatest hero, Thacholi Othenan, is remembered as a devotee of the Goddess, and young students of kalarippayattu still come here for her blessing.
Tradition holds that the temple is around 1,500 years old. The best-known story says it was founded by a community of settlers – often described as Aryan Brahmin traders – who came to this coast and slowly took up local customs. Devotees believe the Goddess travelled with them, walking behind the group in the form of a woman, and that their descendants still think of her as their own mother rather than a distant deity. Other local versions of the origin story also exist, and they do not all agree.
The temple is woven into the Vadakkan Pattukal, the ballads of north Malabar. The story goes that Thacholi Othenan, the fearless kalari hero of Kadathanad, prayed at Lokanarkavu before each of his duels. Because of this bond, kalarippayattu students traditionally seek the Goddess's blessing before their first public performance. Poorakkali and Thacholikkali, ritual dances with movements close to the martial art, are part of the temple's festivals.
The temple is also valued for its art. Its old wall paintings of gods and goddesses, done in natural colours and believed to be several centuries old, and its wood carvings make it a protected heritage site of the Kerala State Archaeology Department. Once under the Kadathanad rulers, the temple is now administered by the Malabar Devaswom Board.

Traditional, modest clothing is best: a mundu or dhoti for men, and a saree, set-mundu, long skirt or churidar for women. As in many Kerala temples, men may be asked to remove shirts before entering the shrines. Follow the temple's current notices.
Entry inside the nalambalam follows the temple's customs; please follow the temple's current notices. The three shrines stand close together, so plan time to visit all of them. Photography of the old murals and inside the shrines may not be allowed.
The Pooram festival in Meenam (March–April) and the Mandala season in Vrischikam (November–December) draw the biggest crowds, especially on the evenings when the lamps are lit. On ordinary days the temple is peaceful; early morning or the evening deeparadhana are pleasant times to visit.
Thacholi Manikoth – the ancestral home and shrine linked to Thacholi Othenan, near Meppayil in Vadakara.
Vadakara town – the old market (Thazhe Angadi) and the heart of the Kadathanad region.
Sand Banks, Vadakara – a quiet beach where the river meets the sea.
